Lee Kendel hasn’t never enjoyed the blissful, uninterrupted sleep like the past three decades, since she gave birth to her first baby. And since then, it was like a nightmare for Kendel being roused up by the wailing baby every wee hours.

“It really greatly impacted on my body,” recalls the Sechelt, BC, mom of two. “In fact, the first moment I saw Sophia, I really wasn’t well prepared for being a mother, not even well prepared for nursing a baby.”

Although specialists guarantee us that there’s nothing abnormal about an infant who catnaps or wants to nurse all night, unless this behavior conflicts big-time with mom’s need to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at her breakfast meeting …or, on a more basic level, need to get rid of her bean.

Not every parent, yet, is ready to let ter baby cry it out. Even though Kendel was annoyed when she couldn’t get Sophia to sleep, when her second child, Griffin, started waking up more frequently at night, she refused to let them cry out. “I won’t do it,” she says, “Griffin’s cry shows he needs me, then I get up and do something I can to satisfy him.”

Additionally, these methods also need two important words: commitment and perseverance, which are hard to hear when you are expecting to get four hours of shut-eye. “At this time, you have to say, Ok, I’m about to give up some sleep for the coming week or two,” says Pantley, “and make some fixed changes that will be remaining a year from now on.”
Whether it works for everybody. Shauna Dardis of Calgary is still struggling with her son’s frequent night waking after applying the steps in Pantley’s book. After Dardis read five or six other sleep books and find it all rather complicated, she complains, “the techniques and ideas in each book vary from those in any other book, and you don’t know which is the right one.”

So far, Pantley haven’t heard any bad feedbacks, among the over 200 letters Pantley received in a month, sometimes, she says, a little adjusting will do the trick. “Maybe the TV’s on and the house is bright, and we should be dimming the lights and switching off the TV before bedtime. Eventually, we make it.”

Sleep plan

Lee Kendel usually spends an hour or more in an endless cycle of nursing, patting and rocking her six-month-old Sophia to sleep. Only to have Sophia open her eyes again at the slightest creak of the floorboards under her mom’s feet. “It seemed to never end up,” remembers Kendel. • Introduce a bath every night to wind down baby (and mom too).

Kendel saw improvements within days. Sophia fell asleep quickly when Mom snuck out, creaking floor and all. And when she awoke for a feed at night, Sophia slipped back to slumberland without a fuss.

Where’s Sophia at now? At 2½, bedtime is not a struggle anymore. “She rolls over and says, ‘Good night, Mama,’ and I leave. There’s never any getting up or calling for drinks of water, after I’ve left,” says Kendel. “She’s phenomenal that way.”

Hearing from parents who were still fighting with sleep problems when their kids were no longer babies, Elizabeth Pantley wrote The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers. “I found that sleep problems won’t magically disappear because a child grows one or two years old.” she says.

New issues arise along with this age. There’s the yo-yo problem, when a crib graduate won’t put in his new big-kid bed. And what about that bedtime wind-down routine if that’s so important for babies just as critical for toddlers and preschoolers. “Children thrive on routine,” says Pantley. “They look for consistency to their days, which give them security.”
